UNDP Empowers 200 Youths and Women with Skills in Renewable Solar Energy Systems

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with AFS Vocational Hub, has successfully trained 200 youths and women through the Vocational Training in Renewable Energy Systems (VTRES) program. This transformative initiative aims to equip participants with the skills and certifications needed to excel in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector, focusing on gender inclusivity and support for persons with disabilities.

The 8-week program, which began on October 2, 2024, provided hands-on training in designing, installing, and maintaining solar energy systems. Participants received certifications from the Ministry of Labour, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), and AFS Vocational Hub, along with starter packs to facilitate their entry into the renewable energy industry.

The training supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 5 (Gender Equality). It addresses Nigeria’s dual challenges of energy access and unemployment while contributing to the nation’s energy transition and economic growth.

Voices from the Program
“This training is a vital step towards achieving sustainable development in Nigeria. By empowering youths and women with practical skills in renewable energy, we are tackling unemployment and fostering a clean energy future,” said Clare Henshaw, National Program Specialist for UNDP.

Babafemi Oladosu, Managing Partner of AFS Vocational Hub, emphasized: “We are proud to collaborate with UNDP to deliver this impactful program. Providing starter packs ensures participants can immediately apply their skills and build sustainable careers in this critical sector.”

The program has trained 133 males, 67 females, and 4 individuals with disabilities, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities.
